Superintendent's Monthly Message

May/June 2018

The last few weeks of school are busy for all, filled with projects, events, celebrations, and important planning for the summer months and beyond. As the school year draws to a close, I would like to celebrate every individual who has made this year successful and has played an important role in the lives of our students.

Our teachers, classified staff and administrators welcome students day in and day out, they lead students in their learning journeys, they support families and their fellow educators, and they also dedicate so much of their time to the wellbeing of every child. I’d also like to acknowledge our families, whose support of our schools is invaluable to making every school year a successful one. At this week’s Board of Trustees Meeting, we celebrated our school and district volunteers. They are a group who represents a much larger parent community of volunteers and dedicated people who truly make our schools the best place for students and staff alike.

While we draw closure to the school year, it’s important to remember that a student’s learning does not end on the last day of school. Through family vacations and organized activities, the summer break is full of opportunities to continue that learning.

For interested families, there are several outside organizations that provide summer camps and programs at our schools. Our students also have the ability to access to the online programs that they use during the school year. We will be offering an orientation and summer help sessions to support parents access these programs. Information about specific programs will be shared with teachers and parents in the coming weeks.

Lastly, after my April Superintendent's message, I have been stopped by parents again and again asking what they can do to address the funding inequity for school districts in the state of California. They are frustrated by the fact that we are one of the lowest funded school districts in the state. If you would like to become involved, you may write to one of our local  legislators to let your voice as an advocate for students be heard.
